Sian was born in Derbyshire, England and is now based on the beautiful Isle of Anglesey in North Wales. She painted portraits for many years, and nowadays specialises mostly in cats and dogs on commissions, painted faithfully in very fine detail from photographs.
Her preferred medium is high quality Gouache and sometimes Acrylic, depending on the subject. Unlike Acrylic, Gouache can be re-worked even when dry. It can even be used in a similar way to oils with the addition of gum arabic, although she normally uses it as it is.
Sian paints directly onto a dark surface, having first drawn the subject lightly with a chalk pencil. She likes to focus on the subject and light source, preferring not to include backgrounds which she feels can detract from the subject.
It is difficult to predict how long a particular piece may take to complete, but it’s useful to have two to three months notice before the finished painting is required. It is also important to provide several photographs which include the favoured pose, together with some good quality ones to represent the actual colour and detail of the animal, including the eyes.
